Trip To ‘Monto’
Students from our junior and leaving cert classes took a guided tour of Dublin’s historic ‘Monto’ area, the red light district made famous by James Joyce. Local Historian, Terry Fagan, has written a book about the area and brought the history to life for the students.
The Monto area around Montgomery Street, is now known as James Joyce Street. It was known as ‘nightgown’ in Joyce’s famous novel ‘Ulysses’. It was a notorious area full of brothels and seedy characters. The students heard from Terry, of the real lives of people who lived around Montgomery Street, through colourful anecdotes and humorous and heart-warming stories.
